A medium-sized tree, Croton lechleri L., in the family Euphorbiaceae, is a medicinal plant species used widely by multiple ethnolinguistic groups in the western Amazon basin to treat a variety of ailments. Common names for this plant include sangre de drago, sangre de grado, conw (waorani in Ecuador), lan huiqui (quichua in Ecuador), uruchnum (untsuri shuar in Ecuador), and masujuain (cofan in Ecuador/Colombia). The red bark latex of this tree is used in South America to treat a variety of diseases,8 including: oral administration for diarrhea, stomach ulcers, hepatitis, lung problems, flu, cough, and diabetes; topical administration to treat herpes simplex lesions, cuts, and for wound healing. Additional ethnomedical reports on the use of this plant latex include: orally to treat rheumatism in Peru;9 orally to treat leucorrhea, fractures, and piles in Peru;10 topically as a hemostatic and wound healer, as a vaginal bath before childbirth, and orally for intestinal and stomach ulcers in Peru;11 to treat cancer and applied topically for wound healing in Brazil and Ecuador;12,13 topically as a wound healer in South America;14 topically to treat inflammations in Ecuador.
