Description: Chitosan is a mucoadhesive, biodegradable polysaccharide derived from shellfish. HemCon and ChitoFlex supply chitosan in ready-to-apply bandages. When exposed to blood, the bandages become extremely adherent and facilitate clotting. The molecule is also positively charged and may attract negatively charged erythrocytes, further enhancing clot formation. HemCon bandages are larger and supplied in various sizes to treat external wounds. ChitoFlex bandages are more flexible and compact, facilitating the treatment of penetrating trauma tracts. Both are latex-free and have no known complications or contraindications. They can be left in place for up to 48 hours and should be removed with water or saline for definitive wound treatment. Traumadex is another polysaccharide-derived powder and sponge that dehydrates the blood, concentrates blood constituents, and promotes clot formation. In a swine model of lethal hemorrhage, it did not perform quite as well as HemCon or QuikClot.
